Introduction to HSE Library Services: OpenAthens

Introduction to HSE Library Services

Your OpenAthens account

In order to access the HSE Library's electronic resources, you must have an 'OpenAthens' account*.

'OpenAthens' is a one-stop shop to the wide range of electronic resources provided by the National Health Library and Knowledge Service. These include electronic books, electronic journals, bibliographic databases and point-of-care tools.

Having an OpenAthens account means that a single login will unlock all our electronic resources.

Login now to start browsing

If you don't have an account, you can apply for an OpenAthens account online. You can also look for the 'OpenAthens' tab on the library's homepage. Select from 'Set up an account', 'Log In', 'I forgot my password' or 'My account has expired',

You will need:

  • A valid email address - if you use a personal email account, your OpenAthens Account will need to be authorised
  • Your HSE employee number
  • When registering, you will need to choose your geographic area and the hospital or service where you work
  • Using your OpenAthens username and password, you can then access the resources listed on our homepage -

*Access to some resources may not require an OpenAthens account if accessing from a HSE site. However we strongly encourage you to apply for an OpenAthens Account to assure access*
